The Northern Oasis Hafla rides again!

We miss having our friends over to play music and dance all night, so we're finally hosting another hafla at our place. Details below:

Bring your instruments and your favorite hip belts or scarves, and
come over to our place to shimmy and play music all night long with
friends. We'll have tasty middle eastern snackage and our usual
homemade chai, and lots of room to dance, play music, or just lounge
and show off your jewelry:-)

When: Saturday, January 24th, 2009, beginning at 7pm
Where: AEcern (Safiya & Nott's house), Kitchener, Ontario (write to me if you want details/directions)

TribalCon single day passes closing...

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that the single day passes will be closing after this weekend. There are still about 10 full weekend passes left and then the workshops will be completely sold out. There are still show tickets available and the After Party food from Nicola's is still available to purchase, we will let everyone know ahead of time when we will be closing those down.

We are all very grateful that even during these hard economic times everyone is still coming out to support these amazing artists!!!!

I've heard from our Pittsburgh Bellies and it looks like everyone is still going to give it a go!

Some out of towners are coming in to the hotel tonight to have the trip done and over with as there seems to be a break in the weather here now! The hotel has rooms available tonight and can put you under the Pittsburgh Bellies room rate if you want to come in early...

So, we're still on, but please travel safe, and know that Erie understands if you can't make it! We sure will miss you though and will plan another event for like, summer!

SCA- Known World Dance Symposium 2009

For all our SCA friends out there, I'm happy to announce that the Known World Dance Symposium, a fabulous event that takes place every other year in places all over the "Known World" (it's been in various US locations, as well as the Australian continent!), will be held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Kingdom of Ealdormere) from July 2nd-5th, 2009. This event focuses on dance, and to a lesser extent music, from the Middle Ages, and is packed with fabulous classes on actual dances, theory, history, along with opportunities to dance all night long, and generally geek out with people who are passionate about dancing!
There will be a focus on both European and Middle Eastern styles of dance, with classes during the days and haflas at night. We are currently in the process of looking for teachers for dance and music tracks. If you're interested in teaching Middle Eastern dance, performing, helping out, playing music, teaching music or coming out and learning and partying with us, please contact me or Lord Darius (info below) for more information! We'd love to see you in Ealdormere next July!

This multi-talented group of six musicians perform the hauntingly expressive melodies, irregular rhythms, and fiery dance tempos of their native Thrace, in southern Bulgaria on traditional instruments: kaval (folk flute), gaida (bagpipe), tambura (guitar), tapan (large drum) and accordion. Their vocalist Donka Koleva was the featured singer in the film "Everything is Illuminated".

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS...

IVAN HANDZHIEV (vocals, accordions) is a native of the village of Lesovo in the Jambol region of Thrace. He began singing as a small child with his mother and other village singers and started playing accordion at age 9. He attended the Philip Koutev Secondary School in Kotel, then went on to the Plovdiv Conservatory. Ivan is a master of the ornamentation and improvisation technique unique to the Thracian style and has been on the faculty of the Philip Koutev Secondary Music School for over 25 years. (N.B. --- When Larry Weiner heard Ivan sing he thought he was one of the finest Bulgaria singers he'd ever heard)

NIKOLAY DOCTOROV (kaval) is from Varna on the Black Sea coast. He is a graduate of the Philip Koutev Secondary Music School in Kotel and the Plovdiv Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts. He has performed with the Bulgarian State Folk Ensemble “Philip Koutev” and the Horovod Ensemble in Varna, and is the director of the folk music orchestra Spectar. Nikolay is also the conductor of several regional folk ensembles and is currently on the staff of the “Anton Strashimirov” (post-secondary) High School in Varna.

DZHENKO ANDREEV (gajda) is a gajda player from the village of Hanovo in the Yambol region of Thrace. As a boy, he studied with local teachers and later attended the Philip Koutev Music High School in Kotel, where he developed his local style. Specializing in the traditional melodies from his village, Dzhenko has been a soloist with the Sliven Ensemble, and has performed with them in Bulgaria and abroad for over 20 years.

DONKA KOLEVA (vocals) is a native of the village of Tuzha in the Stara Zagora region of Bulgarian Thrace. She graduated from the Musical Folklore High School in Shiroka Luka, and performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. She was the director of the Folk Song Chorus of Sopot, has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio-TV. Donka has participated in many singing competitions in Bulgaria and Europe. Donka's voice has been featured on numerous recordings, and in 1997, her recording of "Javore" was named "Song of the Year" in the Bulgarian national radio competition.

ANGEL KRASTEV (tupan) was born and raised in Yambol in Bulgarian Thrace. He learned to play tupan from the village masters and as a child participated in many music festivals. In high school he formed a popular bitov band that was much in demand for festivals, weddings and other public events. He has served as a soloist with the Yambol Ensemble since 1973.

As always Khafif's music is stuck in my head as I move through my mundane tasks this week, trying to keep some of the Pennsic magic with me. Thank you so much for patiently learning our song this year and being great about rehearsals! And the light in Neefa eyes when she mimed cradling a baby in her performance at the Cure Sallee will stay with me forever. So many lovely memories from Pennsic this year... me, Pacita, Narah and Zimra having y'all all to ourselves late at the O'Choda party...listing to y'all at Clovenshield while I trounced the guys at Bean...getting to see all the different instruments at the period instrument party...Jas being patient with me learning the davul...the amazing red vardo...the wagon train and being 6 of 10... just as Stayce said it was a very relaxing but full Pennsic, one of the best in my 16 years.

Khafif back from Pennsic!

We have all returned to our respective homes after a fantastic week of playing music and dancing at Pennsic:) This was a wonderfully low-key vacation for me with lots of opportunities to play music, but very few obligations: all play and no work! Our few pre-scheduled events were wonderful, as always- the Cure Salee was a high energy event, crammed together on stage with lots of friends, although this year playing music on the way to the battlefield might have been my favorite (Bacon Ciao! has been stuck in my head for days).

If you have Pennsic pictures related to Khafif or music/bellydance/middle eastern events, please feel free to post them. I was so excited this year just to *do* everything, that I didn't bring the camera out of the tent once to stop and take pictures.

Khafif will be seen all over the place in the next few weeks (we'll post a schedule soon), but we're also preparing for our Halloween Hafla at Your Inner Vagabond, on Friday, October 31st, so mark it in your calendars!

Join Jenna Brooke Smith Saturday, October 11 as she brings Moria Chappell to St. Albans, WV for a workshop and show!

Moria will be teaching her intense Tribal Belly Dance Boot Camp in which students will learn the drills and exercises for intense muscular isolation, 4 different shaped shimmies, and conditioning to develop the glutes for crisp hip work. Hip, head, belly, chest and shoulder isolations will be drilled as well as fluid transition from move to move and traveling with isolation. Fundamental spinning technique will also be covered such as spot turns, paddle turns and cross-step turns. Combos, posture, fluid arms and creative poses will be highlighted as the days' workshop culminates in a tribal fusion choreography. Students will learn the tribal technique of stretching, toning, and drilling to gain muscular technique that places the dancer in control of their body as well as variations on classic tribal combinations. Also, students will learn costuming secrets for the stage! All levels are encouraged to attend! 

Workshop Location: Ayash Sports Complex, 2400 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans, WV 25177
Time: Registration 9:00-10:00, Workshop begins 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 1 hour break for lunch, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Cost: Early Bird Special - $75 (includes price of show) by September 8, $80 (includes price of show) Sept. 9 - Oct. 10, $85 at the door.

Saturday night there will be a show! For those of you interested in performing, let me know (dancers must attend workshop in order to perform).

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 7:30 pm: KAL - Serbian Romani Band - Kal puts bhangra beats, Argentine tango, waltz, Balkan blues, Montenegran rap, accordion, flamenco guitar, Middle Eastern rhythms, and Turkish clarinets, with dance floor beats and rock attitude into their concerts. Known in the past as Travelers, Tinkers, and Gypsies, the people who collectively call themselves Roma have left their mark on culture, and have been impacted by the societies around them while still maintaining their identities. Come and learn dance movements from the Roma migrations as well as build cultural knowledge and increase your dance repertoire. Authentic movements from Rajasthan, Turkey, the Balkans, as well several other areas will be covered. Please be sure to bring along your finger cymbals/zills. Fabulous Safa!

Just wanted to let everyone know on how fantastic Claire is! She came to see us dance at St-Basile during our national day La St-Jean-Baptiste and arrived while we were trying to fix a problem with a missing member. Now she knows not to answer "I wish I could help" because I gave her my back up costume and some makeup! LOL You read right, dear Claire did a solo in our final piece and she did it brillantly! She was fantastic, we were so lucky to have her, it was real fun! I just hope she is not traumatised with me now! LOL

After a brief stop in a phone booth somewhere in Oakland to change out of our Persian coats, Khafif will be performing from 5:00 to 5:30pm at Ten Thousand Villages International Fair Trade Day at their Squirrel Hill store, as part of a great line-up of performers from Pittsburgh's Middle Eastern and African music and dance communities. Come hear African and Middle Eastern music all afternoon, along with some great bellydance!

April 11th And 12th?

Does anyone know of any interesting performances or activities on the weekend of the 11th through 13th? I'll likely be driving one of my wards and several of her friends to an Anime convention and staying at the Radisson Hotel Green Tree. I expect to spend some time in the pool and at the fitness center, but don't plan to be stuck in a hotel all weekend with a bunch of teenage girls!

Join Safa at the WSCC in Swissvale (www.wsccpgh.org) on Sunday, February 10 from 10am-12pm for an intermediate master class in Balancing! Ever wanted to learn to put something on your head and still look pretty? Now's your chance to wow the world with your balancing prowess!

PLEASE bring something to balance (a basket or tray works fine if you don't own a sword :) and kneepads or legwarmers in case we add some floorwork. We will be workshopping balancing ideas and brainstorming some fun combos, as well as learning basic and intermediate balancing techniques.

Valizan returns to Khizmet Studio to teach ATS!

After a fun and successful workshop last spring (look for the footage on YouTube!), Valizan finally makes a triumphant return to MizzKhizz's studio in Cambridge with a weekly class in American Tribal Style (ATS) bellydance.

ATS mixes Bellydance, Flamenco and Indian dance in a group improvisation format that forgoes set choreography for dancing “in the moment” while celebrating the bounce of a hip. Learn the basics of ATS, from cueing to formations, posture to working as a team, and the palette of moves that make this a fun form to dance with friends.

This flavour of bellydance, started 20 years ago by Carolena Nericcio of FatChance Bellydance in San Francisco, is where the modern tribal movement began. Jill Parker, Rachel Brice, Kajira Djoumanha, Paulette Rees-Denis all learned from FatChance Bellydance before breaking out and creating their own fusion and ATS styles.

Classes commence Tuesday January 8th, 2008 at 5:30 pm. at the Khizmet Studio in Hespeler, ON.

Valizan began teaching American Tribal Style bellydance at Arabesque Academy in 2004. He recently completed the FatChance Bellydance General Skills Certification and the Arabesque Academy Professional Course. He also performs ATS with his troupe, Shades Of Araby.

Cane Workshop this Sat! 9/29

Join me for a 2 hr Cane Workshop this Saturday at Breathe Yoga Studio.

Years ago, Christine, Elizabeth (Khafif), Jen and I were known as the cane dance girls in Ghawazee. We performed several cane dances at countless festivals and art events for years. I recently took a fabulous cane workshop by Majda of Awalim that reminded me of how much I LOVE the cane dance. So, I've unearthed some of the moves/ technique and styles from back in the day, and I have added a bit of new material, too. Please join me for this upbeat, fun workshop based on Egyptian cane dances and the saucy Saidi rhythm.

The fantastic Khizmet has invited Khafif and Les Trib'elles of Montreal to perform with her troupe Karma at the Royal Medieval Faire in Waterloo, ON, on Saturday, September 15th. Catch our performance at 2pm! Khiz & Karma, Les Trib'elles, and Khafif's dancers will be performing to music provided by Khafif and some special mystery guests.

Later that night, come on over to our place for our traditional house party, the Northern Oasis Hafla, and dance all night long to the live band (or join the band: as always, everyone is welcome!:)
